I do have criticisms of Photoshop, however. My biggest concern is that it remains pretty difficult to get the full power of Photoshop to work on a laptop. That doesn’t mean unsupported Photoshop versions certainly won’t work on a laptop, but it certainly won’t be easy. These are the size-restrictions (by number of cores) that Photoshop uses:
Photoshop CS6 and earlier: 2 cores. 15%.
Photoshop CS5: 2 cores. 13%.
The 3.0 GHz quad core system I’m using for this review runs Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 5 without problem. The problem one computers with less power, a Core 2 Duo system that was only running Photoshop CS6 in 32-bit color mode. I don’t see much reason to run older versions in 32-bit color.
As is true with the other available version, Photoshop CS6, I’m also running Lightroom 5. This means I’m trying to juggle both software’s versions of 25. At the same time, it’s difficult to tell which version took more power. There are some examples of Photoshop-specific CPU and memory usage in the Lightroom 5 review, but none of them really describe my experience. In particular, I didn’t notice any difference in the same-size images when using Lightroom 5’s Hold Saturation feature or Photoshop CS6’s Color Replacement feature.
