Endodontists are dental professionals who receive advanced education for two or more years in which they study root canal techniques and procedures in greater depth. So let us now move forward and understand their role in dentistry and also what happens during the treatment procedure.
During a root canal treatment or endodontic treatment, local anesthesia will be given to you and a rubber dam, made out of latex, will be placed around the tooth so that it can be isolated. This helps in teeth being clean and dry during the entire treatment procedure. Your Endodontist will perform three to four basic steps in this dental treatment procedure however it might differ for different type of cases. Ideally three visits might be required however many a times just one visit have proved enough to rectify the dental problem. In any situation the treatment will depend on how grave is the infection and inflammation. Although your dentist will do everything that they can to make sure that you are cured fast.
Root Canal Treatment or Endodontic treatment has a very high success rate of 90% and your Endodontist will be discussing with you entire procedure. The discussion will help you take a decision whether you are comfortable with the procedure or not. Do not worry if the dental problem does not get cured with the help of endodontic treatment as there are other options as well.
It is difficult to spot oral pain caused due to toothaches or cracked / fractured teeth. The reason is the vast array of nerves which are spread across your mouth. Because of these nerves the pain might not be felt at just one place. It may be felt across the mouth, adjacent tooth, head or even neck. This is where an Endodontist plays an important role and helps in detecting the exact location and thereby carrying out the root canal treatment.
However that’s not the only role that an Endodontist has to play in your dental treatment. Whenever you meet with an accident there are strong chances that the pulp in the tooth will get damaged. The accident can happen while traveling or playing sports or even a blow to child’s permanent teeth which stops the growth of the root. Your Endodontist will carry out a procedure called as Apexification, which stimulates the bone to be deposited at the end of the root. This helps in avoiding the root canal treatment. They are trained to deal with cases where in the tooth has been completely knocked out of socket. This primarily is the reason why most of the dentist will refer you to an endodontic specialist.
After the treatment is over make sure that you visit your Endodontist twice every year. This will help in understanding the condition of your teeth and how quickly it is healing. You need to make a note that abscess once formed in your teeth, will take 2 years to heal. So make sure to visit your practicing dentist and talk to them about your situation.
