Rest is often one of the first suggestions that a doctor will make for back pain, because so many cases of back problems are simply due to stress and exhaustion. If this is not enough however, your doctor may decide to put you on medication, at least until you have found relief of your pain or dealt with the root cause.

Medications can be tricky, because although they may help relieve your back pain, they often come with unfavorable side effects so you are gaining in one aspect but then losing in another. It can then obviously be quite difficult to decide whether or not you should even stay on the back pain medication, and you will probably have to sit down and weigh out the pros and cons to make the right decision here.

Upper left back pain and upper right back pain can range from being so mild that it is hardly noticeable to being so severe that it will keep you from performing your regular daily activities.

Upper left back pain and back pain in general is extremely common, costing millions is lost work around North American and as well millions in medical, state and insurance resources each and every year. It is critical that if anyone starts experiencing upper left back pain that they get in to see their doctor as soon as possible. This is for several reasons, and definitely just for your own comfort, but also because back pain of any sort can be the sign of an underlying health condition which may end up being quite serious.


Obviously if you are a sufferer of back pain one of the most important issues that you are going to be concerned with is treatment.

Obviously prevention is the first step, as there are many things that you can do to try and prevent back pain from even starting at all, but since this is not always possible, you will want to be aware of the different treatments that are available as well.

One of the most effective treatments for upper left back pain is pain medication. This will help make sure that you are not kept from your normal daily activities, and you will have to go to your doctor for this. Over the counter painkillers such as Tylenol and Aspirin may be enough for you, but if your pain is more serious then you may need stronger medication.

Your doctor may prescribe prescription strength anti-inflammatories or may prefer to use combination opioid/acetaminophen medications such as Vicoden or Percocet.

You can definitely trust in your doctor to choose the right medication for you, and yet at the same time you want to make sure that you are familiar with the type of medication that they are considering and of what the, if any, side effects are. This is important because there may be so many possible side effects that you just might have to weigh out the pros and cons offered by the medication. Also remember that some are very easy to become dependent on, so you really need to be careful and make sure to take the proper dosage.
