When you suffer from back pain there are certain sports that you may want to take part in that can increase the risk of aggravating the problem. Certain risky sports you would consider as high intensity sports are football and gymnastics. These types involve a lot of intense twisting and bending that puts extreme pressure on the spine.
Bowling is a not a high intensity sport therefore, you would consider it to be a low risk sport. However, certain bowling techniques can put a lot of stress on your spinal area. That is why bowling is considered a medium risk sport when back pain is involved.
Certain techniques in bowling have the affect of twisting your spine when you are rolling the ball forward. At the same time of rolling the ball both your upper body and your lower body turn in opposite directions. There is also a risk in how you carry the ball. Bowling balls are quite heavy and when you hold it with your arm fully extended this also puts pressure on your back.

• Bowling balls can be very heavy and with a weakened back it is important that you do not use a ball that is too heavy for you. It is also important that you hold the ball correctly with your fingers positioned securely in the holes so that you can release the ball in one smooth movement.
• It is a good idea to do strength training exercises that will build strength into your upper and lower body. When your back muscles are weak they cannot support and protect the spine effectively. This makes your spine more prone to injury because it is less able to cope with the pressure and stress that is put onto it.
• After a back injury you may want to consider wearing extra support for your back. This can come in the form of a corset. This can provide extra support to your spine and back muscles. It also has the added advantage that it reminds you why you are wearing it. This will make you more aware and careful when you are bowling.
